🚗 COE, Decoded

Why a Toyota costs a house here — the Certificate of Entitlement, explained.

What COE is

To own a car you must first win a Certificate of Entitlement at auction — a 10-year license to simply HAVE a car. Supply is capped; bidding runs twice monthly. Premiums have run north of S$100K for larger cars.

The categories

Cat A (smaller cars), Cat B (bigger/EVs), Cat C (commercial), Cat E (open). Watch Cat A/B premiums — they're the housing-price conversation of Singapore.

The math everyone does

COE + car price + taxes ≈ 3-4x the car's value elsewhere. It's why MRT + Grab is the default and ownership is a flex. Official results: LTA OneMotoring after each bidding exercise.
